Cayenne and Place des Palmistes
The capital, Cayenne, is centred on Place des Palmistes and its tall royal palms. The soft-coloured Creole houses, cobbled lanes of the old town and the market, buzzing with spices and chilli peppers, set a lively scene. A late-afternoon date, over a passion-fruit juice or a ti-punch, happily lingers after nightfall.
Rémire-Montjoly, the beaches
Right next to Cayenne, Rémire-Montjoly lines up long fine-sand beaches edged with coconut palms. The rocky headlands, where leatherback turtles come to nest between April and August, call for respect and wonder. A barefoot walk at sunset makes a change-of-scene date, where the ocean and wind replace long sentences.
Kourou and the sky
To the west, Kourou shelters the Guiana Space Centre, launch site of Ariane. Tours and, above all, launch nights, offer a powerful spectacle to share. Offshore, the Îles du Salut, including Devil’s Island, tell a darker story. On Lyad, people from French Guiana share their favourite outings; it is up to you to find someone to look up with.
